    1. Understanding Automotive Sensors

Automotive sensors are like the “sensory” system of the car, which can sense various information about the car itself and its surroundings, and convert these non-electrical signals into electrical signals, which are transmitted to the car's electronic control unit (ECU).The ECU controls the various systems of the car according to these signals, so that the car can be safe, The ECU uses these signals to control the various systems of the vehicle so that the vehicle can operate safely, efficiently, and comfortably. For example, the air flow sensor allows the engine control unit to accurately calculate the amount of fuel injected to achieve the best air-fuel ratio to improve fuel economy and power performance; wheel speed sensor for the antilock braking system (ABS) to provide information to prevent the wheels from locking when braking, to ensure driving safety.

    1. Classification and Role of Automotive Sensors

Engine Intake and Fuel Injection Control Sensors

    1. · Air Flow Sensor: Used to measure the air flow into the engine, the air flow signal is converted into an electrical signal and transmitted to the engine control unit (ECU), which accurately calculates the injection volume according to the signal to realize the optimal control of air-fuel ratio and ensure the engine's power performance and fuel economy.
    2. · Throttle Assembly and its Sensors: The throttle position sensor in the throttle assembly monitors the opening of the throttle, reflecting the load status of the engine. The ECU controls the fuel injection quantity and ignition timing according to the throttle position signal and other sensor signals to meet the engine's operating requirements under different working conditions.

    Engine Running Status Monitoring Sensor

    1. · Crankshaft Position Sensor: The main function is to detect the crankshaft angle and rotation speed, and to provide a reference signal for the engine ignition and injection time. It determines the position of the crankshaft by sensing the signal teeth on the crankshaft, so that the ECU can accurately control the ignition and injection sequence of each cylinder to ensure the normal operation of the engine.
    2. · Camshaft Position Sensor: working in conjunction with the crankshaft position sensor, it is used to determine the position of the camshaft, thus recognizing the working status of each cylinder of the engine, such as intake, compression, work and exhaust strokes, etc. Based on the signals from the camshaft position sensor, the ECU can further accurately control the opening and closing moments of the valves to ensure that the engine's air distribution timing is accurate.

Automotive Brake and Safety System Sensors

    1. · Wheel Speed Sensor: It is generally installed near the wheels to measure the rotational speed of the wheels. It is one of the important sensors of automobile anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control system (ESC) and other safety systems. ABS monitors the rotational speed of each wheel in real time through the wheel speed sensor to prevent the wheels from locking up during braking and ensure the vehicle's maneuverability and stability during braking; ESC monitors and adjusts the vehicle's driving status in real time based on the information from the wheel speed sensor and other sensors to prevent dangerous situations such as skidding. ESC monitors and adjusts the vehicle's driving condition in real time based on the information from the wheel speed sensor and other sensors to prevent the vehicle from skidding, tailgating and other dangerous situations.
    2. ·ABS Sensor: usually refers to the wheel speed sensor, which is a key component in the ABS system. It provides wheel speed information for the ABS system, so that the ABS system can accurately judge the movement of the wheels, and then regulate the braking force of the wheels by controlling the braking pressure to realize the anti-lock braking function.

    Engine Emission Control Sensor

    1. l Oxygen Sensor: Installed in the engine exhaust system, it is used to monitor the oxygen content in the exhaust. The oxygen sensor converts the oxygen content information in the exhaust into an electrical signal and feeds it back to the ECU, which adjusts the fuel injection according to the signal, so that the air-fuel ratio of the engine is always kept near the theoretical value, thus realizing efficient combustion, reducing the emission of harmful substances in the exhaust gas, and improving the environmental performance of the engine.
    1. Working Characteristics of Automotive Sensors
    1. · ACCURACY: Sensors must be able to accurately measure physical quantities and convert them into precise electrical signals to provide reliable data for the automotive control system. Even a small error may lead to problems such as reduced engine performance and slow response of the braking system.
    2. · Rapid Response: In the process of automobile operation, various working conditions change rapidly, and the sensors need to respond to these changes quickly and transmit the latest information to the ECU in a timely manner. For example, when accelerating or braking sharply, the wheel speed sensors and throttle position sensors should be able to sense and feedback signals quickly, so that the vehicle control system can make adjustments in a timely manner.
    3. · Reliability: Automotive sensors need to work stably under various harsh environmental conditions, including high temperature, low temperature, humidity, vibration and so on. They should have good anti-interference ability and durability to ensure accurate and error-free operation throughout the life of the vehicle.
    1. Location Distribution of Automotive Sensors

Different sensors are installed in different parts of the car. For example, air flow sensors are usually installed on the air intake duct; crankshaft position sensors are usually installed near the crankshaft; wheel speed sensors are located near the hubs of the wheels or brake discs; and oxygen sensors are installed in the engine's exhaust manifold or after the three-way catalytic converter. Understanding the distribution of sensor locations will help make it easier to find and detect the presence of malfunctioning sensors when performing automotive repairs and maintenance.
